One of the most common questions we hear from patients over 60 is: "Am I too old for LASIK?" The short answer is — it depends. There's no strict upper age limit for LASIK, but there are important factors that determine whether LASIK, or an alternative procedure, is the best choice for your eyes.

There Is No Maximum Age for LASIK

The FDA has approved LASIK for patients 18 and older, with no upper age cutoff. Many patients in their 60s, 70s, and even older have successfully undergone LASIK and achieved excellent results. Age alone is not a disqualifier.

Age-Related Factors to Consider

That said, the aging eye introduces conditions that can affect LASIK candidacy:

• Presbyopia — Almost everyone over 45 develops presbyopia (difficulty reading up close). LASIK corrects distance or near vision, but cannot address presbyopia the same way glasses can. Monovision LASIK — correcting one eye for distance, one for near — is one approach.
• Cataracts — The earliest stages of cataracts may not affect daily vision, but they can affect the LASIK flap and outcomes. Patients with significant cataracts are typically better served by laser cataract surgery combined with a premium IOL.
• Dry eye — More common with age and can worsen after LASIK. A thorough dry eye evaluation is essential before proceeding.
• Corneal health — Corneal thickness and integrity are evaluated at the consultation to ensure sufficient tissue for safe laser treatment.

Better Alternatives for Patients Over 50–60

For many patients in their 50s and older, Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a superior option. By replacing the natural lens with a premium IOL, RLE simultaneously corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia — while eliminating any future risk of cataracts. Many patients never need glasses again after RLE.
