Candidacy Requirements

Key Criteria for LASIK Eligibility

The main goal of a LASIK consultation is to assess whether you are suitable for laser eye surgery and, if so, which procedure is most appropriate for you. Before surgery, we make sure you clearly understand the expected results for your particular prescription and circumstances. These are the main factors Dr. Restivo evaluates.

Age Requirement

You must be at least 18 years old. Our ideal candidates are between 18 and 70, with vision that has remained stable and a prescription that has not changed for at least a year.

Stable Prescription

You should have had stable — or treatable — vision with a corrective lens prescription for at least one year before surgery to ensure lasting results.

Adequate Corneal Thickness

The thickness of your cornea is a crucial factor in determining your suitability for LASIK. Thin corneas may point to LASEK or PRK instead — both deliver excellent outcomes.

Healthy Eyes

Your eyes should be free from diseases such as keratoconus, severe cataracts, glaucoma, and certain retinal or optic nerve conditions, with no active infections or serious injuries.

Good General Health

You should be in good general health, free of uncontrolled conditions such as diabetes or autoimmune disease. Tell your doctor about any medications or conditions that may affect healing.

Not Pregnant or Nursing

LASIK candidates should not be pregnant or nursing. Hormonal changes can affect the stability of your prescription, so we recommend waiting until after pregnancy.
