What is PRK Surgery?

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a laser eye surgery similar to Lasik which is used to correct eye vision problems like nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. In recent times people are considering it as an alternative to LASIK. It differs in the way the cornea (epithelium) is reshaped.

How PRK Works? Step by Step Procedure

  1. Preparation: In this process, firstly the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) is removed.
  2. Laser Corrections: Laser reshapes the corneal tissue to correct the refractive errors.
  3. Healing Phase: Protective contact lens are placed on the eye to protect it in healing phase and the cornea regenerates naturally over a few days.

PRK vs. LASIK

Both PRK and LASIK are great for vision correction, but here are some key differences:

  • PRK Advantages: Ideal for thin corneas, eliminates the risk of flap complications, and suitable for high-impact activities.

  • LASIK Advantages: Faster recovery and minimal discomfort in the initial healing phase.
