LASER CATARACT SURGERY

Advantages Over Traditional Cataract Surgery

The precision of the laser can lead to better lens positioning, reduced trauma to the eye, along with increased predictability with regard to visual outcomes. These factors become even more important when considering the use of Toric or Multifocal lens implants.

It starts with a stair-step incision created on the edge of the cornea. This self-sealing incision is done using the laser instead of a blade, and rarely requires stiches.

Next, the laser is used to create an opening (capsulorhexis) in the thin capsular membrane surrounding the natural lens, which functions as the opening to remove the cataract. Studies have shown that less than 1 in 10 manually created capsulorhexi achieve the same accuracy produced with laser cataract surgery.

The laser also softens the nucleus as it is divided into manageable pieces. This supports successful removal of the cataract using less ultrasound energy. This leads to reduced inflammation and trauma to the eye, along with a faster and more comfortable recovery period.

Using the LenSx® Laser

LensSx bladeless Laser Cataract Surgery provides a technological breakthrough which has significantly improved the accuracy and precision of many of the most critical steps in traditional cataract surgery.

Many of the surgical steps historically performed by hand can now be accomplished using a femtosecond laser. This allows for improved precision and higher degrees of customization related to each eye’s unique characteristics, which yields more controlled and predictable results.

Traditional cataract surgery is already considered one of the safest procedures performed in medicine today, but Laser Cataract Surgery further reduces the already minimal risks associated with Cataract Surgery.
