What Age Can You Get LASIK?
Teens and young adults tired of glasses or contacts often wonder if they're candidates for LASIK. Because young eyes are still developing — with a corneal shape and prescription that may keep changing — the answer is usually to wait.

The Best Age for LASIK in Austin, TX
While LASIK is FDA-approved for those 18 years of age and up, your doctor may recommend waiting a few more years while your vision prescription stabilizes. For many patients, vision stabilizes around the mid-twenties. You can tell your vision is stable when your prescription stays the same for two years.
An ideal age for the LASIK procedure is between 25 and 40 years old. Although there is no upper limit, after 40 you'll want to rule out any other conditions or eye disease that can affect vision before scheduling LASIK. For instance, LASIK is not recommended for those with cataracts, dry eye syndrome, or who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Stable Prescription Required
Regardless of age, your prescription must be stable for at least 1–2 years before LASIK is recommended. Stability means no more than 0.25 diopter of change between two consecutive annual eye exams.
How to check: Review your last two or three years of glasses or contact lens prescriptions. If the numbers haven't changed significantly, you're likely a candidate for LASIK from a stability standpoint.
Older Patients
Is There an Upper Age Limit?
There's no strict upper age limit for LASIK. Many patients in their 50s, 60s, and beyond have had successful procedures. However, the aging eye introduces additional considerations:
- Presbyopia (reading difficulty) — almost universal after 45. LASIK can be tailored for monovision to reduce reading glass dependence.
- Early cataracts — if the lens is beginning to cloud, cataract surgery with a premium IOL may offer better long-term results than LASIK.
- Dry eye — more common with age; this is evaluated at your consultation.
Patients over 50 may be better candidates for Refractive Lens Exchange, which corrects all distances and prevents future cataracts.
