What Is the LenSx Laser?

The LenSx® Laser, the first femtosecond laser approved by the FDA for use in cataract surgery, brings computer-guided accuracy, precision, and a new level of reproducibility to refractive cataract surgery. From inception, the LenSx® Laser has shown measurable improvements regardless of how accurate manual procedures may have seemed in the past.

The LenSx® Laser provides incredible accuracy and reproducibility while performing anterior capsulotomy, lens fragmentation, and corneal incisions. In certain cases, the laser can also be used to reduce small levels of astigmatism, producing even better cataract surgery vision outcomes.

How the LenSx System Works

Step 1: 3D Eye Mapping

The LenSx system uses integrated OCT imaging to create a 3D map of your eye — measuring the lens depth, curvature, and position with sub-millimeter accuracy.

Step 2: Laser-Created Incisions

The femtosecond laser creates precise corneal incisions at the exact location, depth, and architecture specified by your surgeon's treatment plan.

Step 3: Capsulotomy

The laser creates a perfectly circular opening in the lens capsule (capsulotomy) — a critical step that manual surgery can only approximate. A more precise capsulotomy improves IOL centering.

Step 4: Lens Fragmentation

The laser pre-softens and fragments the cataractous lens into tiny pieces, reducing the amount of ultrasound energy (phacoemulsification) needed to remove it — which means less stress on the corneal endothelium.

Step 5: IOL Implantation

The fragmented lens pieces are gently aspirated, and your premium intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted and centered within the precise capsulotomy opening.
