Can You Fly Right After LASIK?

• You need your Day-1 follow-up exam first. This appointment confirms your vision improvement, checks for any issues with the corneal flap, and clears you to resume normal activity — including travel.
• You should not be driving until your vision is confirmed stable — and traveling to an airport requires planning accordingly.
• Rest is important in the first 24 hours. Flying involves activity, stress, and disrupted sleep that can interfere with early healing.

What Happens to Your Eyes at Altitude?

Aircraft cabins are pressurized but have very low humidity — typically 10–20%, far drier than a comfortable indoor environment. This low humidity is the biggest challenge for post-LASIK eyes, which are already more prone to dryness during healing.

After LASIK, the corneal nerves are temporarily disrupted, reducing the natural blink reflex and tear production. At altitude, this is amplified.

How to Protect Your Eyes When Flying After LASIK

• Bring preservative-free artificial tears and use them every 30–60 minutes during flight
• Avoid reading or screen time for long periods — blink consciously and take breaks
• Stay hydrated — drink water, not alcohol or caffeinated beverages
• Wear glasses (if you have any) rather than contacts after LASIK — and protective eyewear on dry or long flights
• Close window shades to reduce UV and bright light exposure
