“How long Does LASIK last?” is a question we hear from many of our patients in Austin, Georgetown, and surrounding areas.
LASIK eye surgery is a corrective procedure for near and far-sightedness and astigmatism. During
Austin LASIK surgery, the cornea is reshaped to correct vision. This shaping is irreversible and permanent. And while the procedure can correct current vision problems, it cannot correct future changes due to aging and degeneration or other medical issues. Below, we’ll cover this question in more detail, so you can get a better idea of how long Austin LASIK lasts.
The
Refractive Surgery Council
(RSC) reports patients who undergo the LASIK procedure achieve better than 20/40 vision and experience a high level of satisfaction after the procedure. Some worry about the effects of LASIK “wearing off”. This myth is untrue because LASIK is permanent, however, some patients may experience vision changes because of the normal process of aging. Although Austin LASIK Surgery is a permanent corrective procedure, a number of factors may affect how long a patient can “see” the benefits. Changes in health or the eyes make this a hard question to answer.
According to the
American Refractive Surgery Council, yes, laser vision correction procedures, such as LASIK, lasts forever. Since LASIK permanently reshapes the cornea and improves vision prescription, the imperfections are gone forever.
There is really no limit on the number of times you can get LASIK. The
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states it can take up to 6 months for vision to stabilize after Austin LASIK surgery. Before additional corrective surgery, its recommended eye measurements maintain consistency for 2 consecutive post-op visits.
If your eyes maintain stability with no vision changes, then you can expect long-lasting effects. However, as a living being, we age over time and this includes our eyes. Some people experience no change in vision after LASIK for 10 or 20 years. But maintaining the same results for a lifetime is highly unlikely. Fortunately, though, the
American Academy of Ophthalmology reports although age-related vision problems are common, many eye problems are treatable.
